Mexican Navy's Tall Ship Arrives In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Baltimore's sailing season is officially underway with the arrival of the Mexican Navy's tall ship.



Jessica Kartalija sets sail with the midshipmen from Mexico.

Midshipmen on the Mexican Navy's tall ship, Cuauhtemoc, prepare for their grand entrance into Baltimore.

"The people who are on this ship include 266 sailors, 108 are midshipmen who have all graduated from the Naval Academy," said Lt. Jose Diaz, Armada de Mexico.

While the ship was built in Bilbao, Spain, it is docked in Acupulco, Mexico. Most of the sailors are from Mexico or South America.

The ship's captain says he is proud to be here in Baltimore and he looks forward to visiting ports on the east and west coast of the United States.

The arrival of the tall ship officially marks the beginning of Baltimore's sailing season.

"What we're trying to do is have this revolving free museum in the port of Baltimore. It's a great link to the past and what built the city," said Michael McGready, Sail Baltimore.

The ship will be in Baltimore for the next five days and admission is free.
