Md. Mental Health Facility To Close

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) ― A state panel has affirmed its decision to close a mental health clinic in Chestertown.

The Board of Public Works agreed to reconsider its vote to close the Upper Shore Community Mental Health Center after some lawmakers complained the panel had received incorrect information.

State health officials want to close the facility, which employs about 85 workers and admits about 200 patients a year, in favor of community-based programs and service agreements with private hospitals.

State comptroller Peter Franchot moved Wednesday to adopt an alternative plan proposed by facility officials and a state employees union, but no one seconded the motion.

The alternative plan would have reduced the number of beds and employees at the facility but resulted in less savings than the administration's plan.
