Always preparing for the next emergency is how Dr. Douglas Floccare describes the mission of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command.
Kai Jackson reports now his 19 years of hard work has garnered him the title of Air Medical Director of the Year.
"Well, it is an honor. I was nominated by my crews and it just means an awful lot," said Dr. Floccare.
Maryland's Aviation Command is the oldest in the country. It's also under a great deal of scrutiny because of a fatal crash in September in Prince George's County.
It was the deadliest in state Medevac history.
"We have tried to emphasize with our crews to focus on what we're doing on a day-to-day basis for patients," said Dr. Floccare.
Four people were killed including the pilot, Steven Bunker, and paramedic Mickey Libby.
Bunker tried to make an emergency landing in bad weather with patients on board at Andrews Airforce Base.
Dr. Floccare is happy about the award but heartbroken that the man who nominated him, First Sergeant Tobin Triebel, was hit by a car and killed on Nov. 7 while jogging on vacation in North Carolina.
