Some Want Delay On Replacing Medevac Fleet
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
Just months after the state's deadliest medical helicopter accident, there are new efforts by lawmakers to delay replacing the state's aging Medevac fleet.
Pat Warren reports emergency workers are fighting back, saying the delay is just too dangerous.
A deadly crash sent the Medevac system into a tailspin and caused the only survivor to send a message.
"Find out what's wrong with all these helicopters and fix them so no one has to go through what I've been through," said Jordan Wells.
Some members of the Senate would answer her call with a study to determine if all is as it should be. It's a study that would delay the House-approved budget for three new helicopters at $55 million.
In written testimony, the Maryland State Police Aviation Command says the study could mean a four-year delay.
While the helicopters are safe, they could be safer. There are dangers of cracked frames and frayed wiring.
Shock Trauma director Dr. Thomas Scalea argues helicopters provide critical time for saving lives.
"It's harder to meet the mission with fewer helicopters," said Scalea.
But some senators want to delay the purchase until it is determined whether the Maryland State Police should stay in charge of the fleet.
A legislative panel this month endorsed continued state police control over Medevac.
