BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is looking for one great name for its new male baby elephant.

The little guy was born March 19 at 9:07 p.m.  He is the first elephant ever born in Maryland.

"Mom and baby are being kept out of public view while they get accustomed to one another. It's a big process, having a baby, especially a 300-pound one," Maryland Zoo general curator Mike McClure told Richard Sher.

The new elephant's been gaining about 2 1/2 pounds a day.

"He's a beautiful animal and when he makes his public debut Saturday, April 26, it will be the kickoff of the zoo season," Zoo president and CEO Don Hutchinson said.

The Maryland Zoo is in desperate need of funds, as much as $30-$40 million to repair old buildings and improve other facilities.

As for naming the baby elephant, there are suggestion boxes scattered around the zoo.

"It has to be a strong name, nothing like Fluffy or anything like that," McClure said.
