POMFRET, Md. (AP) ―

Police say a Maryland high school student is hospitalized after another student stabbed her in the back with a steak knife.

Charles County police say the attack occurred about 11:45 a.m. Monday in a hallway near the cafeteria at McDonough High School in Pomfret. The stabbing happened as students were changing classes.

Police say the 17-year-old victim was flown to the hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The student accused of stabbing the girl also is hospitalized with a hand injury. A third student who tried to intervene was treated by a school nurse.

Police say they are still trying to determine what prompted the attack.
