Federal prosecutors have subpoenaed a fifth state agency in their probe of Sen. Ulysses Currie, whose work as a consultant for a grocery store chain has been subject of a federal investigation.
Pat Warren reports prosecutors are digging deeper and deeper into the role Currie may have played in getting a Shoppers Food Store in Mondawmin Mall.
The U.S. attorney's office issued a subpoena to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development on Tuesday. The subpoena requests all documents related to meetings between the department and Currie regarding or impacting Shoppers Food Warehouse.
It also seeks all documents relating to tax credits, low interest loans, grants or other benefits or incentives "for locations at which Shoppers Food Warehouse had a store or considered locating a store, including but not limited to the Mondawmin Mall in Baltimore City."
Currie's ties to Shoppers are under federal investigation. His work as an outside consultant for the company was not disclosed on required financial reports. Currie's home was searched by the FBI on May 29 as part of the investigation.
A federal magistrate in Baltimore on Thursday granted a request by Currie's attorney, Dale Kelberman, for copies of materials that have been seized from Currie's home.
Magistrate Judge Paul Grimm also granted a defense request for a copy of an affidavit used to obtain the search warrant for the home.
Currie, a 70-year-old Democrat, is the chairman of the powerful Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, which directs spending for the state's $31.5 billion budget.
Attorney Billy Murphy, also representing Currie, says he's confident that Currie will be exonerated.
The Maryland Department of Transportation plans to release documents related to Currie and other state agencies that have received subpoenas.
Prosecutors have issued subpoenas to the Maryland Transit Administration, the Motor Vehicle Administration and the State Highway Administration. Prosecutors also issued a subpoena earlier to the Department of Legislative Services, which turned over eight boxes of records.
