O'Malley Pushes Slots In Speech To Municipalities
CAMBRIDGE, Md. (AP) ―
Gov. Martin O'Malley is making another pitch for support of November's referendum on slot machine gambling.
O'Malley spoke about Maryland's difficult fiscal challenges over the last year, and he asked the Maryland Municipal League to endorse the constitutional amendment to legalize slots.
The organization is a nonpartisan group that advocates for municipal governments.
The governor says it's important to keep Maryland dollars in Maryland, instead of losing money wagered by Maryland residents in neighboring states at a time when the state is facing a budget deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars in the next fiscal year.
O'Malley emphasized that the slots plan is a state-controlled proposal with a nine-member state commission providing close regulation.
If approved, up to 15,000 slot machines would be allowed at five locations in the state.
