Apprehension Eases After Rape Suspect's Capture

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Fear has been running high in Charles Village ever since a woman was raped in April. Now, police say they've apprehended the rapist.

Suzanne Collins reports a judge decided Monday that the suspect must be held without bail.

Women living in Charles Village have been on edge for weeks after a violent rape in which a woman entering her home was forced inside by the attacker at gunpoint.

Police say a sketch made by the victim led them to arrest 44-year-old Marlow Humbert.

"Bravo, very, very pleased with how everybody came together. Obviously the result of team work that this person was caught," said Dana Moore, Charles Village Civic Association.

Sketches of the suspect were widely distributed by community groups.

Humbert was arrested Saturday. On Monday he was denied bail by a judge at Central Booking.

Students at nearby Johns Hopkins University feel they can concentrate on finals.

"We've been more cautious, I think lately because of it," said student Jenny Kline.

Police say they have another, very similar attempted rape in which a woman was shoved down as she was entering her apartment.  They say Humbert is a suspect in that case and possibly others.

While there is some relief, one homeowner says she is very shaken by the rape and the murders of two students in recent years in Charles Village.

"It's very disturbing because I love being in the city, and I think many people are going to consider possibly moving out of the city," said Paula Jaworski.

Court papers say Humbert wore a white mask and gloves. He had a gun and told the victim he'd kill her if she called police.

The head of the civic association says the community and the women must now heal.

"It's a particularly heinous crime against women who have to recover from it physically and emotionally," said Moore.

The public defender representing Humbert didn't challenge his no-bail status. He will get another court hearing on June 6.

Humbert is being held in segregation away from other inmates, and there was tight security in the court for his bail review.  Humbert has a long criminal record, which could have been a factor in Monday's hearing.
