The songs of Swedish rock band ABBA come to life on stage in the hit Broadway musical "Mamma Mia." So far, it's opened in more than 200 cities worldwide. As
Gigi Barnett reports, the show is in town at the Hippodrome.
All the songs from ABBA meet the action of Broadway in the hit musical "Mamma Mia." Baltimore has a front row seat at the Hippodrome.
Michelle Dawson plays Donna, a woman living on a Greek island whose daughter is getting married and wants to know who her father is. It's one of Donna's former lovers and the daughter invites them all to the wedding. That's when Sam, played by John Hemphill, shows up.
"This is a second chance for him to come to this island and reconnect with the love of his life," Hemphill said. "I get to sing some great songs, too."
All of the songs on stage are ABBA hits. For Dawson and Hemphill, the music was reason enough to take the part.
"There is no better way to see the show than the live version, because it's just so...I mean, you jump out of your seats with the music and that makes the big difference," Hemphill said.
"It's just like you're living the party, the whole experience," Dawson said.
But being in a Broadway hit on the road means time away from family. It's not an easy job, especially around the holidays.
"You try to make the best of it, because these opportunities don't come in this business often," Dawson said. "Especially with a hit like `Mamma Mia,' you try to make the best of it."
More than 40 million people worldwide have seen the show. Tickets here in Baltimore are still available.
"Mamma Mia" ends on Sunday.
