EASTON, Md. (WJZ/AP) ―

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control show the number of reported Lyme disease cases in Maryland nearly doubled last year.

More than 2,200 cases were reported in the first 50 weeks of 2007; that's more than any other year in the state. The total for 2006 was fewer than 1,300.

Kai Jackson reports changes in reporting appear to be a factor. For example, Baltimore County reported only two cases in 2006. After the county health department received additional funds for Lyme disease surveillance, it reported 256 cases last year.

Lyme disease advocacy groups believe the true number of cases is even higher than reported because the disease is often misdiagnosed.

Lyme disease is caused by bacteria transmitted through tick bites.
