Cumberland Explores Removing Potomac Dam

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) ―

Cumberland is exploring the possibility of removing the Potomac River Industrial Dam.

The city is taking bids on a study of whether the dam could be removed and what impact that might have on water quality, fish populations and potential recreational river patrons.

Bids are due next week and the study could take between 12 and 18 months to complete.

The dam was built in 1959 as part of a flood control project. It is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers and maintained by the city. The dam no longer provides flood protection but does help to provide water for the re-watered C&O Canal project.

The study will assess how removing the dam will affect recreational uses of the river and the possibility of constructing a whitewater rapids reach and launching facility.
