'Fear the Turtle' Sculpture To Be Auctioned Off

College Park, MD (WJZ) ― If you traveled in Maryland over the summer you may have seen one of those fiberglass turtles representing the University of Maryland. Now those sculptures are about to go up for auction, and it's all for a good cause.

Local artists created fifty of the fiberglass turtles for the "Fear the Turtle" project. They've been on display in College Park and beyond.

The unique pieces of art will be auctioned off Thursday night in College Park with the money raised going for student scholarships.

WJZ'S Ron Matz spoke with University officials. Some of the sculptures are expected to go for thousands of dollars...We'll let the bigging begin, we're asking people to bring their checkbooks and credit cards and dig deep." said Cassandra Robinson.

After the live auction, one more turtle will be reserved for an on-line auction on the University's website that will begin on Friday.
