Domestic Abuse Program Gives Victims Hope
by Richard Sher
(WJZ)
Victims of domestic abuse in Maryland are getting some help from the state as the "Maryland Safe At Home Address Confidentiality Program", is now in operation.
The program took effect Monday, and as Maryland's Secretary of State Mary Kane tells
WJZ's Richard Sher, "It provides a substitute address for victims who moved or are about to move to a new location unknown to their abuser."
Kane also says, "The program also provides a free confidential mail-forwarding service."
Forty-three-year-old Maria Welch was a victim of abuse for three years. She tells
WJZ's Sher, "One night he pulled me by my hair into the bathroom and started beating my head in the bathtub. My son (from a previous marriage) came to the door. I tried not to cry. This is when I decided to get help, knowing my son could also become a victim."
