Young Woman Struck By Lightning In C&O Canal

WEVERTON, Md. (AP) ― A young woman was struck by lightning in the C&O Canal in southern Washington County as thunderstorms rolled through Maryland Saturday evening, fire officials said.

The woman was taken to Washington County Hospital with what appeared to be spinal injuries, said Assistant Chief Eric Gray of the Potomac Valley Fire Company.

Rescue workers initially thought the woman had been on the canal towpath but later learned that she had been in the water when the lightning struck, Gray said.

Power companies around Maryland reported Saturday night that about 50,000 residents had lost electricity during the storms.
