Catholic School Adds Job Experience To Curriculum
by Gigi Barnett
BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―
School is finally out for many Maryland students. But for some, enrollment has just begun.
WJZ's Gigi Barnett reports there's a new Catholic school that's opening corporate and academic doors for city students.
At this school the bell is silent, chairs are empty, and few students are in the hall.
Come this fall the desks at Cristo Rey Jesuit School will be filled to capacity.
It's Baltimore's newest Catholic School. It caters to low to middle income students who are headed to college.
"It's sort of college prep with a kick and the kick is the corporate work program," said Father John Swope, Cristo Rey School President.
Father John Swope runs the school. He says real work experience is what makes Cristo Rey different.
By working one day a week at Baltimore companies, students will raise money for tuition and build some workforce confidence, years before college begins.
"The work program was just to generate income for the school. Just to pay the bills. Everyone totally underestimated the educational value of students going into the workplace" said Father Swope.
It's exactly what some parents and guardians want.
"He needs to be exposed to different cultures, different field trips, atmospheres, and stuff. And this is where I think he can get it," said Tonia Briscoe, a guardian.
"On a spiritual note, the public schools they leave God out and the schools that he's been in -- they incorporate God," said Jeanette Geathers-Curtis, a parent.
There are 12 Cristo Rey High Schools across the nation and there are still some vacancies in the Baltimore school.
