Carbon Monoxide Leak Nearly Kills 5 In Ferndale

FERNDALE, Md. (WJZ) ― The odorless, tasteless and colorless gas known as carbon monoxide almost took the lives of five people in Anne Arundel County.

It happened Tuesday morning on the 100 block of Ferndale Road. Someone inside the home called 911 because the carbon monoxide detectors went off.

Carbon monoxide binds to red blood cells, and blocks people from getting oxygen.

Dr. Albert Polito at Mercy Medical Center tells WJZ's Peggy Lee, "As a result you can have damage to the crucial organs, like the heart, the brain, and other organs".

When fire investigators entered the home they found very high levels of carbon monoxide in the home.

Two people were taken to Shock Trauma. Three others were taken to University of Maryland Medical Center.

Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, fatigue, nausea and dizziness.
