School Librarian Receives Literary Award

A librarian at a private school in Baltimore has been awarded the prestigious 2008 Newbery Medal for Children's Literature.

It sounds like a fairy tale, but for one Baltimore author it's a real life honor.
Laura Schlitz is the librarian at the Park School in Pikesville and as
Ron Matz reports, she's just won a prestigious literary award.
She's signing autographs, flowers decorate her office and congratulatory signs are everywhere.
For Laura, it's a little overwhelming. Her book "Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!: Voices from a Medieval Village," has won the Newbery Award for Distinguished Contribution to Children's Literature.
"This book could so easily have been lost on the shelf. It's such an odd little book. Now it has the gold medal, now people will read this book," said Schlitz.
The books are a collection of monologues performed by Park School students.
"I really do write for the students. So much of what I write comes out of what I see in their faces, when I tell stories," said Schlitz.
It's not only an award winner, Laura's book is already a best seller. It is number 14 on Amazon.com.
Laura Schlitz has been the Park School librarian for 17 years and has written three other books for children.
She'll formally receive the Newbery Award at the American Library Association Convention in Philadelphia in June.
