Funeral Held For Woman Allegedly Killed By Son

CATONSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ― The woman police say was beaten to death by her own son was laid to rest Saturday.

Jessica Kartalija reports her son is behind bars, charged with her murder.

A mother was brutally beaten to death inside their Towson home, and police say her son confessed to the crime.  In a Catonsville church, 39-year-old Donna Campbell-Powell was laid to rest Saturday.

Police say her son, Lewin Powell III, confessed to beating his mother to death with a baseball bat after having a fight over his grades.  He also confessed to trying to kill his father.

Eyewitness News asked several friends and family members about the Campbell-Powell family, but they said they'd prefer not to go on camera, saying they are still in complete shock.  But the family did issue a statement regarding the son, saying "Those who knew Lewin well describe him as incredibly bright and always happy."

Lewin was a sophomore at McDonogh School, where he was in honors and advanced placement classes and part of the jazz band.

But people who knew the family say the 16-year-old was constantly arguing with his parents over his grades.

"He was fearful about telling his parents about a C he got in AP History.  They were really strict with Lewin.  He didn't have a lot of freedoms.  I think he snapped," said family friend Paul Kozloski.

Lewin is being charged as an adult for the murder of his mother and the attempted murder of his father.

Out of 10 homicides in the county over the past five months, half have been caused by teens killing family members.
