Man Charged In Laurel Stabbing Death

LAUREL, Md. (AP) ―

Laurel police have a man in custody in the fatal stabbing of a pregnant Jessup woman on Memorial Day.

Police say 48-year-old Robert Headley is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Christen Hawkins.

The woman's body was found May 27 on a path behind the Laurel municipal swimming pool along the Patuxent River.

Police say Headley had been held in Frederick County on unrelated charges since soon after the killing. He was returned to Laurel for the murder charge on Tuesday.

Investigators say Headley had been a person of interest in the case since it began. Hawkins had been seen getting into her mother's SUV with Headley on Memorial Day. Police say Headley was driving the vehicle when he was arrested in Frederick.
