Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest endorsed Democrat Frank Kratovil.
Longtime Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest crossed party lines and endorsed the Democrat who is running to replace him. Gilchrest lost his seat in the Republican primary to Baltimore County State Senator Andrew Harris.
Political reporter Pat Warren reports Baltimore County may be a long way from the Eastern Shore but voters in both areas are all in this together when it comes to their 1st Congressional District representative.
What Democrat Frank Kratovil and Republican Wayne Gilchrest appear to have in common is that not only do they claim not to tow their respective party line, but in the case of the conservative 1st Congressional District, are willing to cross it. With that in mind, Gilchrest endorsed the Democrat.
Gilchrest was defeated in the Republican primary with the help of a political action committee pounding by State Senator Andrew Harris, endorsed by former Governor Ehrlich. Democrat Frank Kratovil, the Queen Anne's County State's Attorney, is endorsed by Governor O'Malley, who applauded the Gilchrest announcement.
"I think that's a courageous move by Congressman Gilchrest," he said.
Kratovil defines himself by Gilchrest's supporters' standards, but a spokesman for Andrew Harris disagrees.
"Voters are tired of the failed practices," said Chris Meekins, adding they don't want "more of the same."
Gilchrest is completing his ninth term in Congress.
