A father accused of abducting his 7-year-old daughter has waived his right to a governor's warrant and will be extradited from Baltimore to face justice in Massachusetts.
Suzanne Collins reports court officials say 48-year-old Clark Rockefeller signed the waiver before a hearing Monday on a fugitive warrant charging him with abduction of a minor child. He faces no charges in Maryland, where he was arrested Saturday.
Baltimore District Court Associate Judge Norman Braverman set an Aug. 15 date for a status hearing. Authorities from Massachusetts have 30 days to retrieve Rockefeller from Maryland.
He will be held at the Central Booking facility in Baltimore until his return to Massachusetts.
During his court appearance, Rockefeller was dressed in a blue polo shirt and khakis and wore handcuffs and leg irons. He did not speak and was not represented in court by an attorney.
The international search for 7-year-old Reigh Boss, missing from Boston, came to an end on Ploy Street in Baltimore Saturday when a tipster told police the girl's father was renting an apartment in Mount Vernon. For nearly a week pictures of Reigh were plastered on televisions across the country after the FBI launched a nationwide manhunt.
Reigh's father, Clark Rockefeller, is accused of kidnapping her. Officials say Reigh was snatched from social workers during a supervised visit in Boston. At one point, investigators feared Rockefeller was going to take her on a yacht to South America.
Instead they found his 36-foot catamaran at the Anchorage Marina in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The marina manager assisted the FBI by calling Rockefeller to get him to his boat.
The mother, Sandra Boss, who had sole custody, flew into Baltimore Saturday night to reunite with her daughter.
"One of the moments in my police career was personally telling Sandra Boss that we found her daughter. She absolutely collapsed in my arms. I caught her before she hit the ground," Tom Lee of the Boston Police Department said.
Family friend Eileen Ang says Rockefeller paid her $500 to pick him up in Boston on Sunday night and drive him to New York.
At Grand Central Station terminal, Rockefeller bought Reigh two dresses for the trip. He then brought the little girl to an apartment on Ploy Street in Mount Vernon. When someone tipped police off to that, their search in Baltimore started up.
"Investigators used this information to create a ruse to lure Clark from the apartment to the marina by placing a call to him and telling him that his boat was taking off the water," Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.
Police arrested Rockefeller when he left the Mt. Vernon apartment to check on the boat. They found Reigh alone and safe.
"Her first words was that she was happy to see very nice people. She was very pleased with that. She was ecstatic about that," said Noreen Gleason, a FBI Assistant Special Agent in Boston.
Rockefeller will be arraigned Monday to begin extradition proceedings. He is charged with felony custodial kidnapping, assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The arrest ended a suspenseful week that began in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood.
Officials say the investigation was ongoing and authorities were still trying to determine Rockefeller's real identity and if anyone else was involved in the abduction.
Rockefeller used at least four known aliases, and there is no indication he is related to the famous family descended from Standard Oil billionaire John D. Rockefeller Sr., family members said.
