New Clues Link Harris' Murder To Another Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Police make a link between the murder of former City Councilman Ken Harris and another shooting at the same shopping center where he was killed.

Dennis Edwards
has the latest on the unfolding investigation.

At the BP station right across the street from the Northwood Shopping Plaza, Sarfraz Khan--the owner--says tensions run high.

"Three guys came in at three in the morning with the mask," he said.

Khan says the men barged in around Jan. 6 at 3 a.m.  They fired two shots at a cashier who was working the midnight shift alone, but the bulletproof glass separating them did not break.

Ten months later, the bullet marks remain.  A month ago, it happened again, this time right across the street at the Haven Nightclub.  Former Councilman Ken Harris was shot and killed.

Earlier this week, police released surveillance video taken the night Harris died.  It shows three men, two in baseball caps and one holding the Halloween mask detectives found at the scene.

"I believe it was the same people because they were in a mask, you know, and the guy had a silver gun who was shooting that time," Khan said.

Police confirm the shell casings from the scene of Harris' murder match the ones at the January shooting.

A spokesman for Baltimore City Police says the incident was handled properly.  A report was filed, a supervisor signed off on it and there were follow-ups but no suspects were caught.

Even though Mr. Khan has always used bulletproof doors and windows to separate employees from customers, he says he has a hard time keeping them because the crime has gotten so bad.

"Hard to keep up our people because of our situation.  Police come to help us but by the time they come, the guys are gone.  This area is very tough to run business.  It's very scary for us, you know," he said.

Khan says he's been robbed three times in the past eight years.  One time, he lost $7,000 and another $3,800.  He says money is one thing and a life is another.  He can't help but wonder what if.

"If they were caught then, maybe Mr. Harris would be alive," he said.

Anyone with information on Ken Harris' murder is urged to call Baltimore City Police.
