Friends and family are gathering for two viewings for a former Baltimore City Councilman.
Tuesday, 20 detectives fanned out in neighborhoods around the Haven night club looking to fill key holes in their intense investigation and search for at least three suspects.
Mary Bubala reports homicide detectives gathered in a Northwood Plaza parking lot before fanning out to surrounding neighborhoods. Several are along the escape route the suspects are believed to have taken.
"People see bits and pieces and they don't put it all together but if we pick up a piece here and a piece there, we can piece it together," said Major Terry McLarney.
Three days after former City Councilman Ken Harris is gunned down outside the Haven jazz club, detectives took their investigation directly to neighbors. They're passing out flyers with a picture of the mask worn by one of the three suspects while going door to door over an area bordered by East Cold Spring, Loch Raven Boulevard, Argonne Drive and Hillen Road.
Earlier, Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld talked about DNA tests on the mask.
"We're working through the forensic evidence that we've collected," he said.
Detectives are paying close attention to communities where neighbors say possibly key evidence was found in a backyard Saturday morning.
"I think they actually found some gloves behind our house, like, plastic gloves and they just shut the alley down. Neighbors watched them. It was a good thing," said Timothy Barber.
Television cameras weren't allowed into a community meeting at Northeast District Headquarters where homeowners got an investigation update.
Back at the Haven, Carla Lindsey remembered Harris while kneeling in front of a makeshift memorial.
"And I told the family that Jesus loves them like I do and I pray for the family and hope this is over and somebody gets caught and they have an ending to this," she said.
Police tell Eyewitness News they are following solid leads in this case. So far, they're playing things close to the vest. Investigators don't want any foul-ups in the case they're putting together.
Two public viewings will be held Wednesday night and the funeral will be held Thursday at Morgan State University.
