Explosive video caught on a student's cell phone shows an art teacher at Reginald Lewis High School being beaten by her student.
"She sucker-punched me. She just took me off-guard. I turned to look at my students that were cheering her on and then she just hit me," said Jolita Berry.
The attack, while shocking, came during a time where several city schools were rocked with violence, including a fight at Renaissance Academy last week.
"One can respond to incidents of violence by making it about law and order and that has to be part of the response but there are issues that have to do with community responsibility," said Dr. Andres Alonso.
Dr. Alonso says they are investigating all the recent incidents but now says it's time for the public to get involved. The school is seeking at least 500 volunteers to help out at troubled schools.
"Allow the people who are willing to provide that kind of support with the opportunity to become part of the solution at schools that have struggled for decades," Alonso said.
School Spokesperson Michael Sarbanes said it was the community who contacted them first.
"In the wake of the events of last week, we have this outpouring of people calling and saying, `I want to help. How can I help?'" Sarbanes said.
"I don't particularly believe we're going to address this issue unless we have parents involved across the board, so I'm coming to the table to bring that parent involved into the conversation," said parent Michael Carter.
