Hundreds Volunteer In Balt. City Schools

City Schools CEO Andres Alonso made a public appeal for citizens to call in and volunteer in city schools.

It's been two weeks since an art teacher at Reginald F. Lewis High School in Northeast Baltimore was attacked by a student.
The attack was recorded on a cell phone.
Richard Sher reports after Jolita Berry, 30, was beaten by the student, City Schools CEO Andres Alonso made a public appeal for citizens to call in and volunteer in the city's 22 middle schools and 43 high schools.
More than 220 have already volunteered, including Latisha Samuels, a junior at Morgan State University.
"I think when students see someone who is close to their age and see that she is going to college, it will encourage them to continue with their education," said Samuels.
Reverend Giovanni Arroyo is another volunteer.
"Watching the recorded attack is heartbreaking. I'm volunteering to hopefully teach some of the children that there are other ways to deal with problems, that they don't have to react violently," said Arroyo.
"People started calling right after the images of the attack were shown on TV. Each school will decide where the volunteers are most needed," said Michael Sarbanes, Executive Director of City Schools' Partnerships, Communications and Community Engagement.
Meanwhile, Jolita Berry continues to recover from her injuries.
"I can't imagine how I'd ever be able to walk through that door again," said Berry.
