McCain Attends 50th Reunion At Naval Academy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ― Senator John McCain is in our region to mark a major mile-stone. He celebrated his 50th class reunion at the Naval Academy.

Adam May reports his classmates say they're proud but not surprised at how far he's gone in life.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain takes a break from campaigning and travels to Annapolis for his 50th class reunion.

He didn't make any public comments, but his classmates spoke to Eyewitness News.

"I'm 100 percent behind him. I think he's a wonderful choice," said a classmate.

"We got a nickname for the 10 of us who palled around, 'the bad bunch,'" said one of McCain's friends.

McCain's friends, like the nominee himself, joke about McCain's academic record graduating fifth from the bottom of his class.

"His senior year about three months before graduation, he was flirting with the major numbers of demerits you were allowed to get before they threw you out," said Hank Vergo.

"He wasn't that good a flier. He crashed one plane out in the Pacific then he became a POW and came back and worked very hard to renew his career," said Jimmy Cruise.

McCain watched the first quarter of the football game with some of his classmates from the class of '58 as his Midshipmen played Rutgers, and some of his supporters campaigned for him.

"My husband is in the Navy, my father is in the navy. He comes from the Navy; we think much of him," said Sharon Hargrave.

On Sunday, Senator McCain will speak before the National Guard Convention in Baltimore.
