Supreme Court Refuses To Stop Sniper Execution

RICHMOND, Va. (WJZ) ― In hours, John Allen Muhammad is scheduled to die in Virginia's death chamber.  He and Lee Boyd Malvo have been convicted in the 23-day shooting spree that terrorized our area.

Vic Carter will lead WJZ coverage of the execution from Virginia.

For many, it will bring to an end the saga that thrust the Maryland and D.C. area into a panic as random shootings claimed the lives of 10 people and left several wounded.  In just a matter of hours, the mastermind of those killings is scheduled to die for his involvement in the shooting spree.

Right now, John Allen Muhammad sits on death row.  His execution by lethal injection is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Supreme Court decided to not grant his appeal, which was filed by his new attorneys who argue their client is mentally ill.

A defense psychologist linked the illness to Muhammad's service in the Gulf War.

"He returned from the Gulf War with splitting headaches that he hadn't had before, accompanied by disorientation and other symptoms," said Mark Cunningham.

But after leaving 10 people dead in a shooting spree across Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, victims' families have little sympathy.

"We don't consider that there's any winners in this.  We're not ready to celebrate his death," said Bob Meyers, whose brother, Dean, was shot in the head while filling up his car.

But Meyers, who will be one of the witnesses, believes justice will be served.

The only way this execution will not take place is if there is clemency granted by Virginia's governor.  Legal experts doubt that will happen.

Vic Carter will lead Eyewitness News coverage with live reports from the prison in Jarratt, Va., starting on Eyewitness News at 4 p.m.
