Man Mistakenly Freed A Day After Conviction

BALTIMORE (AP) ―

State corrections officials have acknowledged that a Baltimore man convicted in April of attempted murder was mistakenly released from jail the next day.

Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Rick Binetti says the release of Calvin Boswell, 23, highlights the need for release and commitment records to be transmitted electronically, rather than on paper.

Binetti tells The (Baltimore) Sun that currently, the computer systems of the courts and the Baltimore City Detention Center are not compatible.

Boswell was convicted of several charges on April 21 and acquitted of several others. He was supposed to remain at the city jail until sentencing, which was scheduled for June 23. The Sun reports that officials didn't realize until that date that Boswell had been released in April.
