O'Malley Seeks To Divest Maryland Funds From Iran

Governor Martin O'Malley is advocating legislation to divest Maryland investments from Iran.

Maryland lawmakers approved a similar measure relating to Sudan last year.

O'Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese says the proposal relates to taking state pension or investment funds out of Iran out of concern for human rights abuses.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller says he supports the idea. He says the proposal doesn't relate to food, and it's aimed at the government of Iran, not the citizens.

House Speaker Michael Busch is also backing the idea. He says Maryland can find more stable and friendlier countries for pension and investment funds.
