Authorities in Howard County say four people were killed when their car collided with a box truck on U.S. Route 1 in the Jessup area.
Derek Valcourt reports investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.
What's left of the crumpled 2000 Nissan Altima hasn't begun to explain the whole ordeal of the accident that took the life of a man, two women and a child. The accident also seriously injured another child.
The accident happened at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, just north of Patuxent Range Road.
Police say the car was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 1, when for some reason it moved into the northbound lanes, slamming headfirst into a box truck.
Investigators believe the deceased driver was a man in his 30s from out-of-state. They are trying to locate his next of kin. They do not believe he was related to the passengers in the car.
At this stage, the investigators believe the other four occupants in the car, all female, may have been related. While it initially appeared that one of the deceased victims was a teenager, officers now believe she may have been a woman in her 20s. The other adult female is believed to have been in her 40s and the deceased child less than a year old. A child taken to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the only survivor in the car, is four-years-old. Police believe the family may be from Laurel.
The driver of the truck was Stanley Wells, 54, of Baltimore and the passenger was Sean Foote, 23, of Columbia. The two were working for a liquor distribution company at the time of the incident. Both suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Howard County General Hospital. Preliminarily, police do not anticipate charging Wells.
"At this point, we are still actively investigating, trying to determine why the vehicle may have crossed the yellow double center line. We don't yet know the identities of the people involved. And once we know more about that, we will certainly be issuing updates," said Howard County Police Department spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn.
Police were forced to shut down part of Route 1 for hours as accident investigators tried to put together what happened.
Neighbors say they have been complaining about safety on that part of U.S. Route 1 for some time.
