Howard Co. Police Investigate Fatal Jessup Crash

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― A horrific crash in Jessup kills four people.  It happened when a car crossed the center line and crashed into a box truck.

Mary Bubala has the latest from investigators.

The only survivor of this tragic accident is a four-year-old girl. Her condition is unknown as police scramble to identify three adults and one infant killed in Tuesday's early morning crash.

Howard County investigators know the driver of the car was a man in his 30s. They know his vehicle crossed the yellow lines and collided with a box truck. What they don't know is why.

"At this point we're still actively investigating to determine why this vehicle may have crossed the double yellow center line," said Sherry Llewellyn of Howard County Police Department.

The driver and three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. All but the driver appear to be related. They include a woman in her 40s and another in her 20s, as well as a child less than a year old. Investigators are trying to confirm their identities and notify the next of kin.

Although a traffic light wouldn't have helped prevent this accident, residents in the area believe a light would help reduce the number of accidents at this intersection.

"There's a bunch of people that had gotten T-boned. There's a lot of people that have been nailed coming out there, you know, hit in the side," said Jim Lysakovski.

Homeowners like Stephanie Zeiba report fender benders and crashes monthly near or around the accident scene at Jessup's Route 1 and Patuxtent Range Road. Zeiba says she's grateful to have survived two accidents in less than two years.

"I'm grateful it wasn't me, and I really wish they'd do something to put a turn lane either within this intersection at Route 1 or slow down the traffic some," Zeiba said.

The driver and passenger inside the box truck were taken to Howard County General Hospital for minor injuries.
