Man Accused Of Beating Cousin & Woman With Hammer

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Police have one question answered in the brutal assault on a teenage girl and her disabled mother early Thursday morning.

Gigi Barnett reports police have a family member in custody for the attack on the women in their home.

Charging documents tell the story of the yellow police tape around the rowhouse on the 5500-block of Midwood Avenue. Inside, police found two women brutally beaten.

One of them was 17-year-old Qurra Iqbal. Investigators say the blunt force wounds to her head were fatal.

Deborah Beard, Iqbal's mother, was a double amputee. She too was found with massive head wounds and is now in critical condition.

Neighbors say the teen dropped out of school to care for her mother.

"She stayed with her mother everyday," said Ardell, neighbor. "If you seen one, you seen the other. [They were] like sisters."

Police say William Jones, 32, faces a long list of charges from first-degree murder to assault. Jones is the victims' cousin.

In the women's neighborhood Friday, the police tape and disbelief lingered.

"I don't know what makes a mind take off like that, but he was simple," said Ardell.

According to charging documents, Jones lived in an apartment above the mother and daughter.

Early Thursday morning, police say Jones began to drink and argue with his girlfriend. Moments later, he walked downstairs to the victims' apartment and continued the argument with them.

Police say that's when he picked up a hammer and dealt the powerful blows that killed Iqbal. He then turned on her mother.

They say after the assault, Jones ran to a friend's house, but investigators relied on a tip that lead to his arrest.

"Thank you to that person, on behalf of the family as well as the department. Without them, this suspect may still be at large," said Donny Moses, Baltimore City Police spokesperson.

Rescue workers rushed the mother to Johns Hopkins Hospital after the attack. She is in critical condition.
