Man Arrested In Liquor Store Stabbing

CATONSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) ― After a nearly 40-hour manhunt, police arrest the man they say is responsible for what appears to be a random murder in Baltimore County.

Mary Bubala reports before David Briggs was found, he fled to the Pittsburgh area. Officers found Briggs in his car on Interstate-70. They took him to a church for help and according to police, the church minister later found him praying inside the church, naked.

Officers had to tase him and take him to a local hospital.

Still, the arrest of David Briggs is the source of one family's relief and the cause of another family's bewilderment.  For many, it still doesn't answer the most important question: why?

A security camera picture, allegedly of David Aaron Briggs, along with evidence taken from his family's home, produced a late night arrest in the brutal murder of Aysha Dawn Ring.

"We're so pleased that this person is off the street because if this were in fact a completely indiscriminate happenstance kind of attack, what would stop it from happening again?" said Reverend John Swope.

Father Swope tries to make sense of what appears to be the senseless death of an ambitious young woman who ran a 200-student work-study program at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.  On Saturday, Ring and her boyfriend stopped into Charing Cross Liquors to buy snacks.  Briggs allegedly walked up to Ring as she stood in a checkout line, slit her throat and walked away.

"Our information does suggest that they did not know each other at all but as I said, I don't have a motive for why this occurred," said Cpl. Mike Hill, Baltimore County Police.

Shopping center customers tell Eyewitness News Briggs had been standing in front of another store Saturday.  They say he was talking to himself.

Briggs lives in the 1100-block of Sedgewood Road, not far from the murder scene.  His relatives declined on camera interviews and tell Eyewitness News they're in no condition to talk about his arrest and charges.

Briggs has a long criminal record, including burglary, malicious destruction of property and drug possession.

Briggs is held without bond on first-degree murder charges.
