Little Change Found In D.C. Area Homeless Numbers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) ―

A head count in the District and surrounding communities shows almost no change in the homeless population since last year.

The count was compiled for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. It found 11,752 homeless people living in the area, 10 fewer than 2007. One in four of those counted are children.

The authors of the report say the slow economy and the downturn in the housing market might add to the homeless numbers in the coming months.

According to report, 47 percent of the homeless adults in families have jobs.

The count was taken by shelter providers and volunteers on Jan. 24. They visited shelters, tent villages and transitional housing programs.
