Bethesda Residents Fight Homeless Plan
BETHESDA, Md. (AP) ―
Residents of a Bethesda neighborhood are fighting a county plan to turn a large house on future parkland into a home for a needy family.
Montgomery County is planning to buy the property to expand a park. There's a house on the 1.3 acres, and instead of tearing it down, some county council members want to house a 14-member homeless family there. The family is currently living in a local motel.
But many residents are of the Hillmead neighborhood are unhappy about the plan. They say they are not opposed to helping poor people, but believe the decision should have been made with community involvement.
County officials say affordable housing is one of their highest priorities. But they say it's hard to find sites for such housing because of community opposition.
