Woman Killed In Home Invasion

CHESAPEAKE CITY, Md. (WJZ) ― A woman is shot to death during a violent home invasion by a band of robbers in Cecil County. Now police are searching for the killers.

Suzanne Collins reports the crime has rocked the sleepy little community of Chesapeake City.

Chesapeake City is filled with restored homes built in the 1800s. The town on the C&D Canal attracts tourists with quaint shops and marinas. Now that bucolic setting has been thrown way off kilter by a violent home invasion and murder just south of town.

"The residents advised us multiple suspects entered the residence forcibly and brandishing handguns, fired shots inside the residence, did take property from inside the residence," said Sgt. Michael Holmes.

Terry McCoy, 40, owned the home and lived there with her parents. Police say there were at least two robbers maybe more. They aren't saying what they look like or what they took.

In Chesapeake City, crime is very rare, almost non-existent. The Sheriff's Office says this is the first murder for the town in 11 years.

Police say the family was asleep at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday when the robbers barged in. Threats were made, then McCoy was shot in the chest.

"They have good investigators and because there's a murder involved, they're not going to stop," said Dick Wilson, resident.

"It is quiet, it is peaceful, it's absolutely beautiful and we've boated here and been in this area a lot of years. I can't believe it," said Sandy Wilson.

Police got a 911 call from a woman whispering that shots had been fired, and she thought the robbers were still in the house.

Even though police think the family was specifically targeted, people in Chesapeake City can't help but worry.

"That's unbelievable because this isn't like Baltimore. It's just unfortunate," said Jimmy Burton, resident.

The Cecil County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information about the home invasion and murder to call them at 410-392-2180.
