Police May Have The Car In Pa. Fatal Hit & Run

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WJZ) ―

Police may be closing in on the driver who struck an eleven-year-old Baltimore County boy, leaving him to die in the street.

Mike Hellgren
reports a day after the family made a plea for the driver who struck and killed 11-year-old Derek Johnson.  Eyewitness News has confirmed police in York County, Pennsylvania have the car they believe hit Johnson.

"If it was an accident and they're scared to come forth, just come forth anyway and let them know it was an accident," said Joyce Bailey, victim's grandmother.

The victim lived in Baltimore County. He was visiting family in Pennsylvania, and on his bike in Springfield Township, when a car slammed into him. The injuries were so severe he died later that night.

"Show you have a heart of some sort. We may not know how it happened, who did it, what, but in the end the lord knows, you can run but so far, but you can't hide," said Kim Johnson, victim's mother.

Authorities have also obtained a search warrant for the car they believe hit Derek. Sources say the owner of the car is cooperating.

"If this person had a child, they would have to understand how I feel as far as a person hitting someone and leaving," said Derek Johnson, Sr., victim's father.

Derek was a student at Windsor Mill Middle School. Crisis teams were at the school Tuesday.

"When I say his name, it brings a smile to my face because he was such a character.  Everyone knew him, everyone loved him," said Assistant Principal JoAnn Rich.  "His mom gave us a call.  She was so concerned about the children here.  He was a wonderful young man and we are truly going to miss him."

An autopsy will be performed Wednesday.

Sources say no arrests have been made.  If you have any information, please call police.
