Young Boy Dies In Hit & Run Accident

YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WJZ) ― A Baltimore County mother gets a call that shatters her world. Her young child was struck and killed while riding his bike in another state.

The accident happened in York, Pennsylvania over the long holiday weekend.

Mary Bubla reports a driver struck the Baltimore County boy and sped away.

Authorities say the car that hit the boy, Derek Johnson, likely has front end damage, but they had no further description beyond that.

This is a young man who certainly loved his family, and they miss him sorely.

Derek was a student at Windsor Mill Middle School.

Heartbreak for a mother, Kim Johnson, who is struggling to understand why someone would hit her son with a car and leave him suffering on the road.

He was visiting family in Pennsylvania, riding his bike with friends.  It started raining; they were on his way back when a car struck him and then kept going.

Derek had a crushed pelvis and severe head injuries.

"When they took him out of the ambulance, he was still breathing," said his father, Derek Johnson, Sr.  "He didn't make it."

The driver never stopped and hasn't come forward.

"It's so callous of them not to stop," said his grandmother, Joyce Bailey.  "He was eleven."

"Surely you have a heart of some sort.  We may not know what happened, how it happened...but in the end, the Lord knows," said his mother, Kim.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Sunday.  If you have any information, please call police.

An autopsy will be performed on Wednesday.
