North Harford High School has been placed under a modified lockdown with heightened security after receiving a threat.
A Harford County high school was on alert Friday after a teacher threatened school officials.
Jessica Kartalija reports the school went on alert after Brian Norman, a 34-year-old history teacher at North Harford High School, threatened school officials.
The threats came after Norman was arrested for acting inappropriately with a 16-year-old student.
"Instant messaging going on, he was calling her on her cell phone, he had taken her on several trips to the mall, he had asked that she not let her mother know about the situation. And that led to eventually slapping her buttocks after a history class--he was her history teacher," said Monica Worrell with Harford County Public Schools.
Allegations of abuse were made Oct. 24. Three days later, deputies say Norman threatened school officials. When firearms were discovered in his Forrest Hill home, Norman was taken to a medical facility for psychiatric evaluation and released.
"He was arrested last night, taken to IPC and processed. He was given $25,000 bond at which point he did bond out," said Worrell.
As a precaution, school officials stepped up campus security.
"If teachers were going to take students outside, they take a walkie talkie with them. There wasn't a lockdown, but we enhanced security procedures," said Teri Kranefeld.
Norman has been charged with second-degree assault, fourth-degree sex offense and threatening with bodily harm an employee of the Board of Education.
Harford County Public Schools is reminding parents that the threat was not made against the school itself. It was made against school officials, and students do not need to be concerned.
