Teacher Hospitalized After Beating By Student

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Several disturbing attacks have put the Baltimore City school system into an unfavorable spotlight nationally.

Gigi Barnett reports the latest incident involved a teacher who was left battered, bruised and hospitalized.

The teacher is choosing not to speak publicly about what happened, but he tells Eyewitness News he is angry at parents who refuse to discipline their children.

It's only one of more than 100 similar incidents in Baltimore City this year.

The most recent happened Thursday at Mervo High School just as classes were letting out for the day.

Sources say the teacher, Jimmy Grills, was assaulted by a student.  Grills was then taken to Union Memorial Hospital.

"I heard it was a fight, and I heard a teacher got beat up by a student and some craziness. And it was chaos in the hallways," said junior Kiara Hopson.

School officials confirm they are investigating the incident, though they're not saying what sparked the outburst.

"That is ridiculous. I mean teachers don't get paid enough to come to school and get beat up. I just think it's terrible. Parents need to be held accountable," said parent Cheryl Boone.

Grills agrees and says he sees a frightening trend developing and feels parents need to be held accountable for their teens actions.

"That's crazy. You come to school, you're supposed to learn and the teachers that are supposed to be teaching you are the ones getting beat up," said sophomore Laurene Bell.

Earlier this week, a teacher at Renaissance Academy was hospitalized after a schoolyard brawl left her injured.

Last week another frightening incident was caught on cell phone video of a Baltimore City high school student beating up her teacher.

Now school officials are demanding swift and severe consequences for anyone involved in on-campus fights.

"There are consequences. There must be consequences because in order for teaching and learning to occur, there has to be a climate of safety in the schools," said City School Superintendent Dr. Andres Alonso.

"Teachers are the ones we look up to, not the ones who are supposed to come to school and get terrorized," said parent Emma Bell.

School officials say they are investigating the latest incident and plan to take swift and appropriate action.
