Man Fatally Shot At Harford Co. Firehouse

JOPPA, Md. (WJZ) ― Harford County Sheriff's deputies are trying to piece together the string of events that led to the shooting death of a man during a birthday party.

The violence erupted Sunday night at a firehouse in Joppa.

Mike Hellgren reports crime tape lined the Joppa Magnolia Fire Hall Monday morning.  Police say 22-year-old Tariq Alston died after being shot just before midnight.

"He was shot in the upper torso and we are currently investigating at the moment," said Monica Worrell, spokesperson for Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say there was a private party at the fire hall. A group rented it out.

Eyewitness News
found the ad for the event on MySpace.com. It's called "Keep It Live." The ad says it's an event for those 17 and older, and lists music performers, prize giveaways and an available bar.

Authorities believe the hall was booked for a birthday party.  There were between 50 to 60 adults enjoying the night when the shooting occurred. At this early stage of the investigation police have no description of whom shot Tariq, who is from Edgewood.

Tariq was pronounced dead at Chesapeake Medical Center.

His parents are still struggling to come to terms with their son's murder.

"Just saw the wound. I mean that was painful, and he didn't deserve it," said Robert Alston, Tariq's father.

"The initial part, I was just in shock. I just went into a frantic and stuff, I mean I just start praying, asking God, I said, 'you gotta come here now,'" said Daphne Alston, Tariq's mother.

Police have conducted extensive interviews with people who attended, but so far no one has been arrested

"We had between 35 and 40 people here being questioned. The party was just letting out, and so deputies had been interviewing people since about 12:15, 12:20," said Worrell.

The victim's family is begging anyone with information to come forward.

"We don't want to overlook the fact that a lost kid or children chose to pick up a gun and shoot our child, but the fact that this is a crime, then justice must be served," said Robert.

Investigators are looking for any tips that could solve this case.
There is a $1,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. The number to call is 1-888-540-TIPS.
