Columbia Debate On Over Right To Line Dry Clothes

COLUMBIA, Md. (WJZ) ― To hang clothes or not to hang, this is a question hanging over the heads of people who are living in most of the villages in Columbia.

Karl Glock is president of the Water's Edge Community Association.

"According to our rules, outdoor clothes dryers are disallowed, although no one has ever requested one," said Glock.

"My opinion is it's not unreasonable to allow outdoor drying, like drying umbrellas and retractable clothes lines. I think there are people who will use it to save energy," said Jeanne Ketley, president of the Maryland Homeowners' Association.

Although most of the villages in Columbia require applications be submitted, no applications are necessary in the village of Oakland Mills.

Alexander Lee is executive director of the non-profit, Project Laundry List.

"Project Laundry List is making air drying laundry acceptable and desirable as a simple and effective way to save energy," said Lee.
