Md. Man Gets 50 Years In Hammer Beating Of Wife

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) ― A Wicomico County judge has sentenced a Delmar man to 50 years in prison for beating his wife with a claw hammer after taking her to a sand pit and binding her with duct tape.

During the trial in April, 25-year-old Muhammad Naim Akram's wife testified that her husband told her he was going to kill her and poured gasoline on her body.

She told the court that she prayed to God to change his mind.

Judge W. Newton Jackson says he's concerned about Akram's perception of the events and expressed doubt that Akram felt any remorse.

The state requested the maximum penalty for attempted murder, life imprisonment, but felt the sentence was fair. Akram will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
