Maryland state fire marshals say careless smoking started a fire that killed a 32-year-old Hagerstown man.
Deputy state fire marshals said Thursday that Nathan Babb was the only person in his second-floor apartment Monday when the fire started. The property owner's son tried but couldn't rescue Babb about 7:40 a.m. in the 1900 block of Dual Highway.
An autopsy shows Babb died in his bedroom from smoke inhalation and burns. Investigators said the accidental fire started when a cigarette caught something nearby on fire.
