HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) ―

A family member says former Hagerstown City Council member Linn Hendershot has died.

Hendershot was employed as the director of communications for the Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown. He used a wheelchair because of childhood polio and was considered a champion of the disabled.

After graduating from the University of Maryland in 1966, he moved to Georgia and worked for four years as the assistant director of public relations for the Atlanta Falcons.

In the 1990s, he represented the Committee On Disability Access and worked to ensure that the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta were accessible for people with disabilities.

He returned to Hagerstown in 1997, the same year he underwent a tracheotomy for life-threatening bronchial pneumonia. From then on, he needed a ventilator to breathe.
