Gypsy Moth Defenses Focus On Frederick County

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) ― The Maryland Agriculture Department says Frederick County could lead the state in foliage lost to gypsy moth caterpillars next year.

But experts say the damage will be much less than in 2007, when the invasive forest pests defoliated 68,000 acres statewide.

Tree damage from the cyclical infestations dropped sharply this year to about 19,000 acres, including about 3,700 in Frederick County. State forestry officials and private landowners plan their strategies for pesticide spraying each fall, based on surveys of gypsy moth egg masses.
