Global Warming Back Before Md. Lawmakers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ― One of Governor O'Malley's top priorities is the environment. He has several ideas to curb global warming.

The issue was back before Maryland lawmakers Friday, this time in the House, where two committees will start looking at a proposal to slash carbon emissions.  The committees are looking at a bill backed by Governor Martin O'Malley to set carbon reduction goals aimed at reducing climate change.

Supporters say Maryland should join other states in adopting steep
carbon cuts to inspire the federal government to do the same.

Mike Schuh reports hundreds of small businesses showed up to support O'Malley's ideas.

The plan would lower gas emissions by 25 percent by the year 2020 and by 90 percent in 2050.

"With 3,100 miles of coast line, Maryland is uniquely vulnerable to see level rise, to a rising sea level," said Delegate Kumar Barve who sponsored the bill.

But those who oppose it say the goals of 25 and 90 percent are too aggressive.

"I'm afraid that we're going to get panicked and end up doing something that is going to be very costly, cause a lot of people to be out of work, reduce our quality of life all because people panicked," said Spiro Lancaster.

The Senate has already begun work on a similar measure.
