Prince George's County police say a baby girl, believed to be only a few hours old, died after she was found abandoned in a plastic trash bag in Takoma Park.
Police spokesman Cpl. Clinton Copeland says the baby was found about noon Sunday in the 6300-block of New Hampshire Avenue.
Police say the girl was found by workers in some brush or trees in a residential and commercial area.
"He say, 'oh, somebody, something inside is, feels alive right.' And the guy, he opened it," said a witness.
A fire department emergency crew did CPR on the infant, but the baby was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later.
Homicide detectives canvassed the Hyattsville neighborhood looking for leads to the mother's identity.
In Maryland, a safe haven law allows somebody to leave a baby at a police station, fire station or hospital without facing charges.
