1-2 Punch From The Pump Could Nix Summer Trips

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ―

Gas prices are inching closer to $4 a gallon with just a week before the unofficial start of summer, and that could have an impact on travel plans.

In boxing, it's said that everyone in the ring has a plan until they get hit.

Kai Jackson reports many Americans probably had plans of driving somewhere for Memorial Day, but AAA says many Americans hit hard with sky-high gas prices may just stay home.

AAA released a survey that says the number of Americans traveling 50 miles or less for this month's holiday will fall nearly one percent, 31.7 million this year compared to 32 million last year.

It will mean vacations in places like Ocean City for Marylanders.
But AAA says many people may be taking a detour because of gas prices.

According to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, the national average for gas is $3.78 a gallon.

In Maryland, the statewide average is on par with that number at $3.76, but motorists have some hope.

"I think it's a bubble. I think it will come down. I don't know when it will come down. It will never come down to as low as it was before," said Christine Thompson from Federal Hill.

Most motorists say they may not be able to stop that gas meter from climbing, but they can pump the brakes on driving.
